travel tips for Mexico

Mexico is an exciting and diverse travel destination. It offers awesome weather, stunning beaches, incredible food, a rich history and warm-hearted people.

But, to make the most of your time here, there are a few things to know before going to Mexico.

Every traveler knows that a little research goes a long way, and that’s why I want to share some travel tips for Mexico. It will help you understand Mexico better and have a great trip, no matter what part of the country you visit.

Travel Tips for Mexico

1. Eat Where the Locals Eat

It can be very tempting in Mexico, to want to stay in the tourist areas, especially if you are worried about safety (more on this later). And although it is good to be vigilant in Mexico, it is not necessary to miss out on local experiences, such as eating where the locals do.

Mexico has one of the best cuisines in the world, and despite what you might be expecting, you will find way more than tacos, burritos, and quesadillas in this country, especially if you venture to the busy local eateries.

Not only will you save a fortune, but you will get to try some delicious meals such as Cochinita Pibil (slow-cooked pork stew) and Tamales, and let’s not forget the local freshly made guacamole. So, if you see a busy spot, full of locals, go on in!

2. Be Vigilant but Not Afraid

Despite what you might assume, Mexico is not as unsafe as people think.

Travel to Mexico with an open mind, while being vigilant, just like you would anywhere else.

Although crime can and does happen, it is generally in the areas outside of the cities, in rural parts which you will most likely not visit, so there is no reason to be nervous or worried about visiting this country, as Mexico is generally a safe country to travel to.

do show that crime rates have gone up in the past five years and in many parts of the country it’s best to avoid walking alone at night.

3. The Bathroom Situation

Don’t worry, Mexico has proper bathrooms. What I’m talking about is what you’ll be confronted with when you enter a public toilet.

In Mexico you’ll notice that the women’s bathroom has an M on the door, meaning Mujeres (Women in Spanish), while the men’s toilet has an H on the door, meaning Hombres.

And, in Mexico they don’t flush toilet paper. You’ll find a small waste bin next to the toilet. Use that for your toilet paper instead.

4. Do Not Expect the Fast-Paced Life

Mexico is a place where people enjoy life, and take things slow. If you are used to sticking to strict schedules and always being on time, this might be a bit of an adjustment.

Things will get done, but it may take some time.

Be patient and go with the flow is probably one of the most important travel tips for Mexico. And don’t be surprised to see businesses closed in the middle of the day – it’s siesta time.

5. Try to Get off the Beaten Path

By saying this, we don’t mean, go off on your own into the middle of nowhere, but rather just get out of the ‘tourist trail’ and try to get local tips and recommendations, especially when it comes to hidden gems, to get a more authentic experience.

Some examples of this can be going to a lesser-known cenote, attending a local festival, or visiting towns that aren’t listed in every travel guide.

Keep an open mind, talk to the locals wherever you go in Mexico and you never know what you will discover.

6. Don’t Underestimate the Size of Mexico

It is common to want to see and do as much as you can in a short time, but make sure to check the distances beforehand. And if you are only in Mexico for a short vacation, then it’s best to limit the number of places you visit to avoid rushing around and stressing out about seeing it all.

Many people take several trips to Mexico and focus on one area at a time, such as Mexico City, Baha, or the Yucatan peninsula.

Take your time, relax, and soak up the Mexican vibes!

7. Mexico Has Great Hotels at Low Prices

If you think that traveling on a budget in Mexico means sayingin (not that that’s a bad thing), think again, because Mexico has some awesome deals on all-inclusive resorts especially in areas such as , Puerto Vallarta, and

If you fancy a bit of luxury, be sure to check out the various hotels that offer all-inclusive deals and if you book a mid-week, you might get an even cheaper deal, so treat yourself!

8. Mexico is UNESCO Heaven

If you are into history, my travel tip for Mexico is to make time to visit at least one UNESCO site. Some of the most famous ones are Chichen Itza, Teotihuacan, and Uxmal. These sites are incredible!

9. Basic Spanish is Recommended

While not everyone finds it easy to grasp a new language, if you do and you have some time on your hands, it is worth picking up some basic Spanish before you go to Mexico.

In tourist areas many people speak English. But you will have a more authentic and genuine experience if you can have a basic conversation with locals, order food, or buy goods in Spanish.

The feeling you get when you can understand each other, even on a basic level, is very rewarding. And Mexicans really appreciate it when you try to speak some Spanish.

10. Always Pay in Pesos

Mexican pesos

In Mexico, there will be times when you have the option to either pay in US$ or Pesos. Always choose Pesos.

Businesses can choose the exchange rate themselves and you’ll get a better deal in Pesos.

So, even though you might see ATMs in Mexico that offer both US$ and Pesos (in the more touristy areas), make sure to take out Pesos and pay in pesos every time.

11. Bring a Water Bottle With a Filter

One of the more important things to know before going to Mexico is that it isn’t recommended to drink tap water unless you filter it.

Therefore bring a refillable water bottle that has a filter. This way you don’t have to buy plastic water bottles during your stay. Not only will the cost of buying bottled water add up, but it’s of course also not environmentally friendly.

I recommend the water bottles. They are the best-known brand and have been receiving positive reviews for years. A slightly cheaper alternative are the water bottles.

12. Get Travel Insurance

Of course, most likely nothing will happen during your trip to Mexico. But it’s best to be prepared!

Whether it’s lost luggage, a missed flight, or worse, a visit to a Mexican hospital, at those times you’ll be thankful you have travel insurance!

13. Use a VPN

No matter where you travel, if you plan to use wifi anywhere I highly recommend a VPN

A VPN will make sure your private information is hidden and that you can browse websites securely, no matter what wifi network you use.

I’ve been using PureVPN for years and I am very happy with them. It’s easy to use and one of the best-priced VPNs available.
